In recent years a number of restaurants and bars have decided to change from modern looks to a more antique feel, harking back to a bygone age where bars could be situated in cellars or older buildings. Nowadays this feel is felt to be more urban, low lighting and wall finishes that look like they have been ‘uncovered’.

The owners of the venue wanted us to create a finish with an urban feel but looking aged and to go with brickwork and other raw looking material. They effectively wanted walls that look like they have been there for years.

We proposed a lightly distressed concrete finish and what we call an aged Marmorino finish, which involves blending, layering and some colour washing. Having created all the sample boards that show these finishes, the client gave us the go ahead.

Many of the commercial installs are time sensitive, with owners wanting to be open as quickly as possible. This can be difficult, especially in there are a number of trades on site. With this particular install we had to work to very strict deadlines with pressure to complete so that the venue could be open in time to catch some of the Christmas trade.

As with all installs in restaurants and bars the finish has to be hardwearing and stand the test of time. So product choice, application, drying times and finish are critical. We worked on the bar fronts and pillars with a Novacolor Archi+ Concrete finish which is a great choice of product to use for a busy high street bar, the walls will cope and age well in this environment.

We also installed feature walls using Novacolor Marmorino KS giving an aged textured finish, these are our signature finishes that we really enjoy creating. At 150 metres this was one of the smaller installs we do, but it’s always a pleasure working with this particular finish and style.

A very cool bar with that aged but urban feel. The client fully understands why we used the products we did and were glad as they work so well with the rest of the bar.

This particular bar happens to be in my home town, I can be found there from time to time with students that are attending our training courses. Not only is it work we are proud of, it really is a great example of where and how these products can and should be used.
