What is Venetian Plaster?

As Venetian plaster suppliers, we must be knowledgeable and have experience with the products we offer. Here, we’ll share what you need to know about Venetian plaster.

Venetian plaster was used in the ancient societies of Egypt, Rome, Greece, China, Mesoamerica, and Japan. These cultures all built structures made of lime, which still stand today.

Lime offers a soft, natural, luminescent finish with a depth of colour not achievable in other surface treatments. These characteristics were prized by the ancient societies who used lime and Venetian plaster.

Practical & Durable

In addition to its beauty, Venetian plaster was also prized as a practical, durable surface treatment by our ancient ancestors. Limestone is a practical material that’s breathable and doesn’t put off VOCs. This material can be used in wet environments, where it works to naturally inhibit the growth of mould and mildew.

What’s more, Venetian plaster is easy to patch, and it can be used to fill in small cracks that may form. The material is 100% natural and is made without harmful substances or byproducts.

What’s Venetian Plaster Made Of?

As Venetian plaster suppliers, we must be familiar with all aspects of this amazing lime plaster. So, we’ll share some of our knowledge of what the plaster’s made of and more.

Venetian plaster begins with limestone that’s rich in calcium carbonate. Limestone is then made into slaked lime putty.

Venetian plaster is a sustainable, environmentally-friendly substance that can be used in our modern spaces. The plaster is durable, resistant, and ecological, all while creating a stunning aesthetic in any room or space.

The process of turning limestone into quicklime starts by “baking” the lime. It can take over a week for the limestone to be turned into quicklime. Over that time, the process requires a stable temperature, with the continuous addition of sawdust. In addition, lasers are used to purify the fumes released by this process before they’re released into the environment.

The next step is slaking the lime putty. This stage involves adding water to the quicklime. During this process, dense liquid is created that must be thoroughly filtered for any unbaked material. Any unbaked material could damage the quality of the final product.

After the straining process has finished, the purified quicklime is sent to large tanks, where the next stage in the slaking process takes place.

Aging

The next step in the slaking process is ageing the lime, which is done in a 500-ton pit. Here, the lime stays for about 6 months. During the ageing process, the chemical properties of the lime are altered to create the unique texture and appearance of slaked lime.

This step is crucial to developing authentic slake lime.

=

Filtration

During the filtration process, the slaked lime is micro-filtered to ensure it has a creamy, smooth texture that’s free of impurities.

Pigmentation

The final step in creating Venetian plaster is the pigmentation process. Here, the carbonate crystal dries and forms a hard invisible crust on the surface. This binds to the pigments, and the colour becomes a part of the Venetian plaster. It’s this step that makes lime plaster last with vibrant colours for many decades and centuries.
